Sawa-i-Lau Caves

Yasawa Islands

The majestic Sawa-I-Lau Caves a 'must-do' activity for travellers visiting Fiji's Blue Lagoon in the Yasawa Islands!

The ancient limestone formations, carved by constant wave action, are hidden within a tiny island in the northern Yasawas. The beautiful saltwater caves - made famous by the Hollywood hit movie ‘Blue Lagoon’ - are a popular destination for boat excursions with Blue Lagoon Cruises or when staying at a resort nearby.

The history of the caves is legendary; the story goes that a young Chief once safely settled with his betrothed in the cave after her family threatened to marry her off to a rival Chief. Every day he would swim into this hidden grotto with food for the girl until eventually they both escaped to the safety of another island and to be together forever. The sacred Sawa i lau Caves are also known as the resting place of the ten-headed ancient Fijian god, Ulutini.

Sawa-i-Lau’s secret attraction are two caverns, filled with turquoise seawater pools that are fed by the tides. Daylight floods the first (and larger) cave from an opening along its southern ceiling and wall. It’s a pleasant swim but surprisingly cooler than outside the cave.

You’ll need a guide (and a bit of courage) to lead you through the secretive underwater entrance to the second, smaller cavern. According to the guides, it’s only when you’ve entered this dark, inner sanctum that you’ve visited the true ‘heart of the Yasawas'.
